The Department of Earth Sciences and Geography mourns the death of Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Werner Kasig.

Prof. Kasig was born on June 8, 1936 in Breslau and studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg, the University of Bonn and the RWTH Aachen, where he graduated as a geologist in 1962. He received his doctorate in 1967 and the Venia Legendi at RWTH Aachen University in 1980. After a substitute professorship at the University of Essen, Prof. Kasig took over the teaching and research area "General, Regional and Historical Geology" at the Geological Institute of the RWTH in 1982 until his retirement in 2001.

Prof. Kasig was a scientist by conviction and was happy to pass on his great expertise to the students. He was particularly interested in the geology of the slate mountains on the left bank of the Rhine, the Eifel and the Aachen area, and especially in carbonate rocks, lime and environmental geology. Among other things, his dissertation (1967) and postdoctoral thesis (1980) provided fundamental knowledge about Devonian and Carboniferous reef and platform limestones decades ago, which will become the target of deep geothermal exploration in the Aachen area in the coming years.

Prof. Kasig was particularly committed to geological public relations work and was the initiator of today's highly frequented geopaths, visitor mines and museums. His commitment to young geoscientists was also outstanding. As a driving force, he laid the foundation stone for the foundation of the Berufsverband Deutscher Geowissenschaftler e.V. in 1984, of which he became the first honorary member in 1999.
In addition, Prof. Kasig was one of the founding members of the Laurensberg Friends of the Earth and was honoured for his services with the Laurensberg Plaque.

With his death on June 22, 2020, the RWTH loses a highly esteemed colleague, active scientist and popular teacher. Our deepest sympathy goes to his family. We will always honour Prof. Kasig's memory.
