Free Attempt Regulation

From the winter semester 2022/23, the new free attempt regulation will apply to all students in Bachelor's degree programmes. Students can apply a total of three times for examinations that were graded "not sufficient" (5.0) to be considered as not having been taken. The examinations must be taken within the first three university semesters. The current study progress certificate and, if applicable, a certificate that an oral supplementary examination has not been applied for, must be submitted together with the corresponding application in the following semester at the latest.

New free attempt regulation according to § 14 Para. 3A ÜPO

"Students in Bachelor's degree programmes can apply up to three times to the Central Examinations Office for a Bachelor's degree programme exam graded "not sufficient" (5.0) to be considered as not having been taken, provided that the exam was taken within the first three university semesters. An application to this effect must be submitted with the required evidence (current study progress certificate, if applicable, certificate that an oral supplementary examination has not been applied for) no later than in the semester following the semester in which the written examination was taken. It must be received by 15 May at the latest for examinations in a winter semester or by 15 November for examinations in a summer semester. Sentence 1 does not apply if the grade was set due to an attempt to deceive, a failure to attend or a withdrawal without valid reasons in accordance with § 15, Para. 2. Sentence 1 shall also not apply if an application has already been made for a supplementary oral examination in the case of a second repetition of a written examination graded "insufficient" (5.0). The provisions of sentences 1 to 5 shall be evaluated in the summer semester of 2025."

IMPORTANT

  • It is advisable to take the examinations in mathematics and natural sciences in the first three semesters so that the free attempt regulation applies in case of failure.
  • The corresponding application, together with a current certificate of study history and, if applicable, a certificate that an oral supplementary examination has not been applied for, must be submitted in the following semester at the latest (deadline SS: 15.11., WS: 15.05).
  • CAUTION: The 3rd university semester is not the same as the 3rd subject semester in a degree programme, but the sum of ALL semesters of ALL degree programmes.
