The eventful year 2023 for the Department of Earth Sciences and Geography is drawing to a close. There were in-person events such as GeoTag, several Rock Talks and the Science Night. Numerous excursions were offered, e.g. to Ireland, Oman, the Alps and Spain.

The department also welcomed two new professors in 2023: In March, Prof. Florian Wagner took over the teaching and research area "Geophysical Imaging and Monitoring" and in October, Prof. Florian Fußeis took up his position in the teaching and research area "Applied Structural Geology". Furthermore, a "Leerprofessur" in "Tectonics and Geodynamics" was created for Prof. Susanne Buiter, who took over the Scientific Directorate at GFZ Potsdam in 2022 after two years at RWTH Aachen University.

After more than 26 years at RWTH, Prof. Littke retired at the beginning of October. Probably the most dramatic event was the fatal accident involving Prof. Urai at the end of May, which left the division speechless. In addition to Prof. Urai, the loss of Prof. Echle and Prof. Gräf was also mourned in 2023.

Contact with alumni also has an important role to play in the division: in the Alumni-Stories, alumni talk about their entry into the professional world and their most impressive moments at RWTH Aachen University. A complete overview of all news from the Department of Geosciences and Geography can be found here.
