Award of the best geophoto
VAG e. V. has launched a new award for the best photo from the field of geo-
sciences.This picture should show a rock formation, an outcrop or a geoscape.
The prize is offered in three levels (1st, 2nd and 3rd prize) and comes with a prize money. The prize is awarded by the VAG e. V. during the Geotag of the Division of Geosciences and Geography.

VAG awards the best geophotos
1st prize: Tamara Biallas
Radiolarite of the Wahrah Formation (Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous). Outcrop in the northeast of Oman, about 16 km from Ras al Hadd.
2nd prize: Winfried Bauer
Småskeidrista, central Dronning Maud Land, Antarctica. Strongly ductile sheared andesitic and tonalitic gneisses and dark gabbros of a c. 1130 Ma old island arc that underwent intense deformation and amphibolite facies metamorphism during the collision of West and East Gondwana 540 Ma ago.
The image was taken on December 13, 1995, and was photographed analog on Ilford FP4, 50 ASA film. Three individual images were scanned and combined to create the present panaroma. In the red circle there is a person as a scale
3rd prize: Maximilian Beeskow
Karst landscape of the Burren National Park (County Clare, Ireland) not far from the Cliffs of Moher. Members of the VAG e. V. and students of geosciences at the RWTH are entitled to submit a
photo. The best geophoto will be chosen by electronic voting by the members of VAG e. V. The
three best pictures will be published on the websites of VAG e. V. and the Department of Earth
Sciences and Geography for one year.
