In mid-May, Professor Susanne Buiter will take over as director of the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam. The Professor of Tectonics and Geodynamics at RWTH Aachen University was appointed as the new Scientific Director and Board Spokesperson of the Potsdam Helmholtz Centre at the end of March. She thus replaces Niels Hovius, who has led the Geo-Research Centre as acting scientific director since November 2020.

To further advance basic research so that science and society remain in a position to face the geological challenges of an Earth in transition, says Prof. Buiters about the goal of her new role. The geological challenges include not only natural hazards but also the energy transition.

PD Dr. Stefan Back will represent the teaching and research area of tectonics and geodynamics on a transitional basis from mid-May.

The Division of Geosciences and Geography congratulates Prof. Buiter on his appointment at the German Research Centre for Geosciences and wishes him a successful start in his new position.
